Thank you for stopping by! Awfully Awesome 80's is your 24/7 listener-supported internet radio guide to the music of the 80's through the early 90's. We play lost and classic top 40 hits, but we also place a heavy emphasis on the minor charters and non-charters...or as we call them, bottom 45's. Special Mixcloud shows will be announced as time permits. If you have a general suggestion or a song request, then please use our chat widget in the lower right corner or the manual contact form below. Your request will be queued for play in at least 60 minutes if it is already in the station's inventory, or else I will receive an email copy of your request. Please note that those who contribute to the "tip jar" get prompt acknowledgment of their requests, even though I try my best to fulfill all requests that are excellent fits for the rotation. Please read the "Membership Special" post below if you're interested in submitting multiple song requests every day.

If you appreciate what we do, then please make use of our PayPal buttons on the site. You can donate a one-time amount or choose from 10 monthly subscription amounts; the donations will help enhance our programming and keep us on Live365. Yes, Awfully Awesome 80's is legitimate and pays artist royalties!

THE CURRENT SERVER IS OFFLINE

Today, there is even more indication that it's time to either plead for my listeners to help get our new server up and running or else hang up the headphones. Our current server has a new batch of issues, such as a significantly lower overall volume, the disappearance of crossfading between tracks, and delays in song request queueing. The server hosting company continues to be unresponsive to its support tickets.

The current server is now offline while these issues are hopefully worked out. It would be too embarrassing to stream it now as it is; it sounds like a two-year-old programmed it!

The overall funds generated for the new server are low at this point (only 1 month is definitely covered), so I can't say for certain what the next step is going to be. Stay in touch and let me know if you can help us out.

MEMBERSHIP SPECIAL

MEMBERSHIP SPECIAL: A one-time $30.00 donation through the PayPal button on our webpage will give you the following benefits:

- One hour of your requests, twice a month. These will be customized into a block by me, and you can mix it up as you wish (top 40 only, minor charters only, album tracks only, an equal mix of top 40 and minor charters, etc.).

- Every other month, you get the opportunity to come up with a special show's theme (60 to 90 minutes).

- You can submit a triple play request on 4 days out of the week and a double play request on the other 3 days. I'm doing this so that I can get more used to the format of our upcoming regular airings of the noontime Triple Decker Music Club.

- Please note that the one-hour request blocks and special show themes must have a variety of artists. The radio gods tend to frown upon a bunch of songs played in a row by a single artist. The triple play and double play requests mentioned above can be by the same artist if you want.

I'm encouraging a collective effort of creativity and not having the programming be all about my sometimes narrow scope (in other words, I don't want there to be too much AOR or heavy metal). And who knows, with enough contributors/supporters, one day we could have a stream that would satisfy the most discerning of audio enthusiasts!

Non-members can make one request per day, but I strongly encourage you to join. I have expansion plans for the stations, and who knows, I may one day resurrect Retro AOR (The Retro Attic Of Rock) - I can think of at least a couple of listeners who would love that! Plans like increasing track storage and primo fidelity require more bucks than I can currently handle.

If you have any questions about the membership, please let me know either here or through our webpage. #MembershipBenefits #songrequests #themeblocks #doubleplays #TriplePlay #membershipspecial

SERVER DOWN

Please note that our server has been down since approximately 3:55 PM today. I have notified the appropriate person, but I haven't received a reply yet. The hosting company's network status page does seem to indicate a critical issue. Unfortunately, there is no timeline, but I will let everyone know when the server is up and running again.

UPDATE: The server is back up as of 1 PM Eastern on 12/2.

AWFULLY AWESOME 80'S WILL BE IMPROVED IN 2026 - WATCH THE BELOW VIDEO FOR MORE INFORMATION!

Health scares, a residential fire, and the loss of a beloved pet brought my morale down for a while, but it's now time to bounce back! The video below will briefly explain the station's concept and new features that will become regular fixtures in 2026.

NEED SOME EXTRA CASH AND WANT TO HELP OUT AWFULLY AWESOME EIGHTIES? TAKE SURVEYS WITH PRIME OPINION!

As most of you already know, Awfully Awesome 80's is a listener-supported station. I usually don't get enough donations every month to cover my server, player/playlist widgets, and licensing bills, so I have signed up with several online survey companies to help offset these costs. I'm enjoying Prime Opinion more than the rest, and I would like to tell you about them so that you may consider coming aboard with them and help my station out if you're not a fan of donations.

Prime Opinion won't make you rich overnight, but if you're willing to stick with it and are looking to take your family out to dinner or buy yourself some clothing, then it can be worthwhile. They are the only survey company I've seen so far that issues various bonuses (obtained after accumulating specific numbers of points, specific numbers of surveys completed, etc.). They are also one of the precious few survey companies that will frequently give you a couple of reward points for your troubles if one of their clients screens you out of a survey.

I can warn you that most surveys will ask for some demographic information that some people may not be comfortable giving, such as age, ethnicity, and five-digit zip code. I have only run across one survey so far that was looking for more personal information, such as mailing address and e-mail address, but all you have to do is just exit the survey. There are no pop-ups or intrusive ads. I recommend paying attention to the survey ratings, as they will be a good indicator of whether you will be screened out of a survey or not.

There are various ways to redeem your points, including PayPal, prepaid cards, and over a hundred gift card choices. If you are interested in signing up, please feel free to use your bonus code within 24 hours after signing up through the link below; you will then receive a 10% bonus on all surveys you do during the following 24 hours.

If you have any questions or need some information clarified first, then please let me know. I think it's enjoyable for the most part, and you shouldn't have a problem finding a topic that's near and dear to your heart.

Speaking of a bonus code, please use my code JJ7LDI after you sign up and are ready to redeem it. Best of luck to you, and thank you in advance for your help! MY PRIME OPINION REFERRAL LINK

SERVER DOWN

The server has been down since around noon. I have a Facebook friend who is affiliated with the hosting company of the server, and he has been made aware of the situation. It involves a datacenter network outage, and all I've been told at this point is that it "should be fixed anytime now." Your patience is greatly appreciated.

TODAY'S "FIVE FRESH FISH" - AUGUST 12TH

Here are today's "Five Fresh Fish":

1. Scorpions - "Still Loving You" - '84

2. Stevie Nicks - "Leather And Lace" - '81 With Don Henley

3. The Dream Academy - "Indian Summer" - '87 Single Edit

4. Gregg Rolie - "The Hands Of Time" - '87

5. Tiffany - "I Saw Him Standing There" - '88

I know that #5 is not everyone's idea of a favorite cover, but I may have another entry coming soon that could give a "thumbs down" just as quick as the Honky Tonk Man laying down for the Ultimate Warrior at Summerslam '88: The Wrestlers' "Land Of 1,000 Dances!"

I recently received a request for more Scorpions, so look forward to "Crazy World," "Wind Of Change," and "The Zoo" also coming soon. The latter received a lot of rock radio airplay back in the day. #Scorpions #StevieNicks #TheDreamAcademy #GreggRolie #Tiffany #ISawHimStandingThere

OZZY OSBOURNE TRIBUTE THIS SATURDAY NIGHT

As most of you already know, legendary heavy metal artist Ozzy Osbourne passed away yesterday, a little over two weeks after doing a final solo set and a final set with his original Black Sabbath bandmates in the UK. Awfully Awesome 80's will pay tribute this Saturday night, July 26th, at 8 PM eastern with a 15-song set that will strictly focus on his solo material from the early 80's into the early 90's. In case you were wondering, these tracks will be the original classics and won't feature any re-recorded instruments.

RIP Ozzy, and thank you for rocking our world for all of those years!

AWFULLY AWESOME EIGHTIES NEEDS YOUR HELP MORE THAN EVER!

As most of you already know, I had a major health scare recently with my heart, and my recovery will take quite a while. I lost my main freelance gig shortly after coming home from the hospital without any explanation, even though I always delivered high-quality work and could work as little or as much as I wanted. Running my stations costs over $200.00 every month, and I will be unable to cover the costs until an equally attractive freelance gig comes along.

I am asking for your help with keeping this station going. For a nominal $30.00 PayPal donation, I will let you have a half-hour showcase of your requests three times a week for the next month. The requests should be hit or lost singles from the 80's and early to mid 90's with as varied an artist roster as possible (I am not allowed to do a showcase on one specific artist). I will allow one album track in your showcase as long as it isn't full of profanity or controversy. Using the PayPal button, filling out a contact form, leaving a chat message, and asking any general questions can be done through this webpage. Thank you in advance!

NEW ROTATION ADD - VANITY 6 - "HE'S SO DULL" - 1982

Vanity 6 were Prince proteges who caused a brief stir during 1982-83 with their suggestive dance numbers and scantily-clad outfits. Their sole self-titled album was released on CD during the late '80s and has been unavailable since around the early '90s, mainly because Vanity(aka the late Denise Matthews - no, there's no relation) became a born-again Christian and didn't want to be reminded of her "nasty girl" past.

"He's So Dull" was the lead-off single from the album and was written by former Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson(he was the guy who traded vocals with Prince during the first half of "1999"). It was a non-charter, but most 80's fans will remember it from its short inclusion in the 1983 comedy classic "National Lampoon's Vacation." MTV did briefly play the below video, but I only remember seeing it during Adam Ant's Guest VJ Hour in January 1983; it was severely edited at the end, totally eliminating the segment where the man gets pushed down the stairs.

Awfully Awesome Eighties' playlist can't be delirious enough without more Prince-related material, so look forward to "Drive Me Wild," Vanity solo, Apollonia 6, The Time, and Jill Jones arriving soon. #Vanity6 #HesSoDull #PrinceProteges #DezDickerson

NEW WIDGETS FOR CURRENTLY PLAYING AND PLAYLIST HISTORY

I'm just letting my listeners know that the "Now Playing" and "Recently Played" widgets on the station's webpage have been updated to newer versions, mainly because I had no choice. The old versions are being phased out to the point where artist images were completely eliminated, and I don't even have the ability to custom-upload my own image choices on them.

The new versions have a fairly reliable stock library of artist images, and I can upload my own when necessary; obviously, the more obscure the artist is, the less likely the stock library will have something. I can't stop you from mentioning that an artist's image is missing or could be better, but trust me, I am well aware of the issues and will strive to perfect them the best I can.

Most artist images will have biographies attached to them on the "Now Playing" widget, and all tracks on that widget have a Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down feature. The "Now Playing" widget has a player attached to the top of it if you don't want to click on the blue "Listen Now" button above it(which leads to a more robust player, but that's just my opinion). Gone are the Wikipedia, "Tweet Song" and Amazon purchase links; the widget developers probably don't think they're relevant anymore, and they're probably right. Everyone knows how to use Wikipedia and Mr. Musk made it financially impossible for anyone to autopost on X/Twitter anymore.

The "Recently Played" widget shows a history of the last 100 tracks played. It refreshes at a rate of every 90 seconds, and I can't do much more than that without the distinct possibility of the widget missing a track. Be aware that the refresh isn't instantaneous due to the sheer volume of tracks in the history. 100 tracks is the maximum capability, so please don't ask me if it can show the last three days, the last week, etc.

I apologize if I don't sound overly positive about these changes. Maybe I'm in the minority, but it seems to me that these days the phrase "New And Improved," whether it refers to technology or the foods we eat, isn't worth a hill of beans anymore. I MISS THE OLD, and that especially means the pre-2016 days of internet radio. I'll let Satchmo conclude this post: "And I think to myself, what a wonderful world..."

UPDATE: After hearing such phrases as "craptastic" and "amateurish," I have reverted back to the old widgets. Hopefully, the company I deal with will at the very least let me upload my own artist images to them if they do in fact no longer have access to the old third party image provider.

HOW TO BECOME A SPONSOR ON THIS STATION!

My two licensed internet radio stations, The Retro Attic and Awfully Awesome 80's, are looking for sponsors. For an extremely low monthly rate(a choice of having your ad run either 5 times a week or 10 times a week on the station), I will produce a 30 second ad that can be dry or that can include background music. I can also offer a sidebar ad for your business(with a clickable link) on one of my websites for a slightly higher monthly rate.

I am looking for specific types of sponsors that, like me, are devoted to keeping oldies and 80's music alive and well:

 1. Used record/compact disc stores across the USA that cater to tourists and/or sell their titles online.

 2. Flea market vendors across the USA that deal exclusively with vinyl and compact discs.

 3. Oldies and 80's related tribute bands that tour either nationally or only in specific areas of the USA.

 4. Long-lost artists from the 50's through the 80's that have new music or books they want to promote, but don't have the time or know-how to do it.

I would be open to discussion on other types of sponsors(such as a pest control business or a restaurant), but only if you have a reputable business with good intentions.

My stations have been around for anywhere from 8-11 years and can reach a worldwide audience; some people will tell you that I'm obviously devoted to yesteryear since I love concentrating on those hits and artists that most other oldies stations no longer touch! I know that some of my listeners love to travel, buy records and see tribute shows, so as CSN once said: "What have you got to lose?"

If you're interested in learning more, then please PM me through Facebook or use the contact form and/or chat function on my websites(http://retroatticrareoldiesradio.com and http://awfullyawesomeeighties.com). As Canned Heat once said: "Let's work together" and build an oldies-devoted network!

Please also note that if you would like to support my stations through other methods, then I do accept donations(one-time or a monthly subscription) through the Paypal buttons on my website. You can also show your support by checking out my auctions and set sales on E-Bay(please see the sidebar listing on this site or search on E-Bay for the seller ID of "retroatticmusic"); maybe I will have a collectible that will interest you!

ANNOUNCING THE "FIVE DOLLAR CLUB" AND THE STATION "GOING RV" IN 2021!

Starting on November 1st, I want Awfully Awesome 80's to be your go-to station...an outlet that has an impressive and wide variety of hits and rarities from the 80's through the mid 90's...an outlet that brings back great memories of simpler times and no boundaries in its radio programming, unlike what started happening with corporate takeovers as the 80's progressed...an outlet that pays attention to its listeners. For a very small monthly subscription of five dollars, you will get to send limitless request lists and get access to higher quality, on-demand tracks that you can hear on your schedule. And more importantly, your subscription will help keep the station running for a long time to come and will help launch a life-changing vision that I'm looking to start in the summer of 2021!

My family and I have lived in the same small abode for over 12 years now(you know the deal, throwing money away), and we're ready to move on. We will be getting a 30 foot plus RV and will be seeing the country. I have a record collecting/former "junking" buddy down south who recently went on an RV trip out west(Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Oregon), and his pictures heavily inspired me to the point of realizing how drastically different scenery can be just a mere one thousand miles away. I'm not getting any younger, so now is the time. I want to take Awfully Awesome 80's out on the road and host oldies parties for those who want them; my wife and I have a professional mixing board and a couple of big speakers and soon will have lots of oldies karaoke at our disposal. I would also like to start a vlog(video blog) called "Somewhere We've Never Travelled," which I have to thank Ambrosia for the title. I'm also going to sell music-related collectibles that I've accumulated over the years, and traveling around should keep the inventory fresh.

The music of yesteryear lives and breathes in me. It has done so especially since I was 10 years old and found myself alone, dealing with the breakup of the one and only family I truly wanted to be a part of. You could even say that this music was my "girlfriend" until I found a lady who really understood what I was all about(we got married in 2010). The pandemic is making me realize that my time in the job market is just about done. I telework at night and answer questions about a worldwide system that is very flawed. All I do is tell people that their cases aren't moving forward and won't for quite some time; other questions I can't help with because I'm not the one who does the actual adjudication of their cases. And the precious few times you go the extra mile and really help them move forward, you don't get any thanks. It's very unsatisfying and frustrating.

But there are two things that bring me happiness and that use natural, unforced energy(besides my wife and son)...AND THOSE ARE BRINGING MY FANS THE MUSIC THEY GREW UP WITH AND HELPING THEM DISCOVER FORGOTTEN GEMS. I'm quite good with music trivia and my dedication to the station I would hope has been fairly obvious!

There is no ulterior motive here. A good number of people know that Awfully Awesome 80's has been around since 2014. Could some improvements be made? Of course, but I do my best to keep up with the changing technology. The station is licensed, and at least a couple of loyal supporters out there are making sure that it stays that way.

Please help out if you can by subscribing at http://awfullyawesomeeighties.com(look for the "Five Dollar Club" banner just below the Paypal banner for more information). All I ask is that when you send your lists of requests, please realize that I will chip away at them as my free time permits. Some requests may not get played if I feel that they could be objectionable/profanity-laced or are just way too long for the average listener to tolerate. Feel free to use the site's chat widget and I will explain how the on-demand tracks will work. You can also ban a song you think is terrible for two weeks as long as you understand that it can't be banned repeatedly.

Thank you for reading this and for your continued listening. Here is hoping that we all have a bright future!
