The Live365 trial run is about to begin. For the next two weeks, I'm going to test out the new stream and make sure that it relays okay to Live365's platform. If it's successful, then I will let you know; just bear in mind that updating the new stream to directories such as Tunein may not happen immediately. I am also thinking about changing the old stream to the ultimate guide to hard rock and AOR.

I will be updating my main promo tonight to emphasize that AA80's is listener supported and is part of the Live365 family. Please help grow the business and make the idea of the station going out on a national tour a reality!

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - JOHNNY AVERAGE BAND - CH CH CHERIE

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY: Johnny Average Band - Ch Ch Cherie - Bearsville 49671 - Peaked at 53 in Billboard on 3/28/81 and at 66 in Cashbox.

This is a decent upbeat number dominated by guitar and new wave styled keyboards. With its female led vocals, it should be accepted by fans of Blondie and Karla DeVito. The majority of the Johnny Average Band's sole album, Some People, has a ska/reggae sound.

Johnny Average is a British keyboardist and vocalist who relocated to upstate New York and met his future wife and bandmate, Nikki Wills. Johnny was one of the players on the '79 debut album from Randy Vanwarmer, the one with "Just When I Needed You Most." Johnny and Nikki would soon become good friends with Mick Ronson, the late legendary guitarist who worked with David Bowie and Ian Hunter.

They did make a video that got some brief MTV airplay during MTV's first year, but it was for the album track "Public Image." It's worth checking out if you like the quirkiness of The B-52's.

Go to Awfully Awesome 80's' website at http://awfullyawesomeeighties.com and look forward to hearing this and many other great bottom 45's every hour! Also being added this weekend will be Nikki Wills' late '81 minor charting version of "Some Guys Have All The Luck." I might as well complete the jigsaw puzzle and include Rod Stewart's '84 hit version too!

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY - CONDUCTOR - VOICE ON THE RADIO

THE AMERICAN BOTTOM 45 OF THE DAY: Conductor - Voice On The Radio - Montage 1210 - Peaked at 63 in Billboard on 2/20/82 and at 68 in Cashbox.

This is a feature I'm going to start doing on a regular basis, especially since Awfully Awesome 80's likes to play a lot of records from the 80's and early 90's that didn't chart or never reached the Top 40. I'm only going to provide pictures as I would like you to tune into the station and hear these tracks or even request them!

Conductor were essentially a male/female duo rounded out with session players. They could have been like Nu Shooz, Eye To Eye or Unipop, but they were a solid-sounding melodic/arena rock act...and there were MANY of them around during '81-'82! Unfortunately, their career never took off as someone from their record label felt that lead singer Judy Comden's walking disability was a stumbling block. The 80's was all about image, whether we agree with it or not. So there was never a big tour or any MTV videos. A somewhat similar thing happened to Romeo Void in '84 when their "A Girl In Trouble" video was made; less emphasis was placed on the lead singer as someone at Columbia felt that she wasn't photogenic enough. Even though Romeo Void finally had a top 40 hit, their career never recovered.

You will want to check this out if you are/were a fan of Toronto, The Breaks/Drama, Quarterflash without the sax, and Scandal Featuring Patty Smyth(who, just like Conductor, started out with a 5 song EP).

"Voice On The Radio" was written by Franne Golde('79 minor charter "Here I Go(Fallin' In Love Again)") and Peter McIan(Men At Work producer and '80 mid-charter "Solitaire," which AA80's plays). Franne and Peter also co-wrote "Cool Kids," which Franne recorded in '80 and Kix made the best-known version of in '83(some of you may remember Beavis And Butthead's trashing of the video!).

You can hear this and many other bottom 45's every hour at Awfully Awesome 80's' website, which is at http://awfullyawesomeeighties.com. We hope to see you soon at Live365!

SPOTLIGHT TUNE FOR 5/19/19

TODAY'S SPOTLIGHT TUNE: Saga - Only Time Will Tell. You know this Canadian prog rock band from the early MTV favorites "On The Loose" and "Wind Him Up."

This 1987 single barely hit the Canadian RPM Singles chart and went unnoticed in the U.S. I only saw the accompanying video once on MTV's New Video Hour when VJ Carolyne Heldman was hosting the show. I remember buying the Wildest Dreams cassette and expecting to see other tracks with titles such as "Sole Survivor" and "Heat Of The Moment," but I was wrong. If you scoured the cutout bins like I did between '88 and approximately '92, then you stood a good chance of finding this album for dirt cheap.

This is now part of the rotation on Awfully Awesome 80's. What other lost Canadian hits from the 80's and early 90's aren't being played on the station? Let me know through our webpage's chat widget!

I will be striving to add around 100 new titles per month from now on, and that includes some early 90's tracks that I mentioned recently(80's related and/or 80's sounding). I'm always taking suggestions!

I hope you have a rocking 2019! Let's hope that The Stray Cats have a successful reunion. And RIP to Dr. Hook's Ray Sawyer and The Captain(Daryl Dragon); while their best days were behind them in the early 80's, they continued to chart and will always be a part of the AA80's family.
