DJ Gilbert Matthews welcomes you to "Awfully Awesome 80's," a 24/7 internet radio station whose main goal is to play every tune that appeared on MTV's playlist between August of 1981 and December of 1989! We will also include lost and classic top 40 hits from the entire decade as well as tunes that aired on MTV's specialized shows such as "Headbanger's Ball," "120 Minutes," "The Basement Tapes," etc. 80's tunes that never had videos or that only aired on non-MTV outlets such as WTBS Night Tracks, VH-1, BET, HBO Video Jukebox, etc. will also be eligible! Every hour, you will hear either 3 or 4 80's "Bottom 45's," which means tunes that peaked south of the top 40, tunes that didn't chart at all, or tunes that only charted in Canada, the UK or Australia. Requests are always accepted! When it comes to "Awfully Awesome 80's," too much 80's is definitely never enough!

DORMANT FOR NOW, BUT WILL RETURN IN '18!

Awfully Awesome 80's and The Retro Attic are currently dormant and will return at the beginning of '18 on Live 365(https://live365.com). There are just too many facts/statements being collected against the company that my stations were licensed with, so I feel it is best to seek out business with a company that is totally problem-free. Here is a summary of what had happened and is just now happening:

1. ASCAP stated that no payments were received from this company for 8 months, so their agreement with them was terminated on June 30th. I and many other of the licensing company's customers had been making payments faithfully during that time, and unexpectedly in early July, we get an ASCAP e-mail stating that we are no longer covered to play ASCAP material.

2. The licensing company responded a few days after ASCAP's e-mail and said that they were in a dispute with ASCAP due to "overpayment of royalties" and that any monies due them were being held in an escrow account. If you're in a dispute, fine, work it out...but they should have continued making payments on our behalf AND TOLD US WHAT WAS GOING ON.

3. From July 1st to the present, the licensing company's webpage continues to display an ASCAP logo and an introductory statement that implies ASCAP coverage. There is no agreement...something that ASCAP has stated multiple times. The licensing company has told its remaining customers to "not worry," "you're covered," and "forward any ASCAP e-mails." They have not provided any physical, concrete proof that we are currently ASCAP covered.

4. The licensing company's current solution involves the acquisition of an "on the verge of being dissolved" AM station in Georgia, supposedly for the purpose of getting terrestrial licensing coverage(including ASCAP) that would take care of us. Well, guess what...ASCAP has no record of this transaction occurring and says that a license of that type would not cover us anyways. The station has been known to have an affiliation with the parent company that runs the licensing company and has a record running back 5 or 6 years involving unpaid fees.

So there are just too many red flags going on. ASCAP has been the consistent communicator in all of this while the licensing company thinks that everything will work itself out. What do you think? A ponzi scheme, perhaps? Did I worry too much? Whatever the case, I can no longer put my radio stations' futures in jeopardy. I apologize for all of the confusion that has occurred in the past several weeks; I tried to remain loyal to the licensing company, but the ugly truth is now finally starting to come out.

I wish that I could simply transfer my databases over to Live 365 and flip a switch to "On," but unfortunately, the databases aren't compatible with Live 365. I will need to start over from the beginning, and hopefully the stations will come out new and improved. I'll provide an occasional update, but expect to hear your favorite hits and obscurities once again starting in the first week of '18.

THE LATEST NEW ADDS AND WE'RE STILL FIGHTING!

Below is a big list of the latest new adds on Awfully Awesome 80's. Some of these you won't hear anywhere else!

We're continuing on. Streamlicensing wants us to forward any mean ASCAP letters to their attorneys, and they stated in a conference call today that they will have our backs in case their dispute with ASCAP goes to trial. Simply put, all of the performing agencies SL is in agreements with were overpaid in royalties for almost the past year due to a technical glitch in the songbase software. All of our stations' commercials, jingles, sweepers and liners were being included in the count. BMI, SESAC and Soundexchange are all being cooperative with the internal audit, but ASCAP ran out of patience. Any monies due ASCAP are currently sitting in an escrow account and will be released to them once an amicable solution is reached(even though, for all intents and purposes, they had been paid all along!). We are supposed to be getting a letter tomorrow that further states SL's intentions and indemnifications for us.

SL has been good to me over the past 3 years, so I'm going to give them a chance to prove themselves. I really think they do have a case. If I feel that it is starting to get "too hot," then I will move on to another outlet.

Back to happier things...it will be "AOR August" on AA80's. I will be looking for suggestions on 80's melodic rock, metal, progressive rock, and southern rock. The more forgotten, the better...but I'm sure there are still some hits that aren't currently being rotated.

POTENTIAL CLOSING OF AWFULLY AWESOME 80'S ON 2/28?

Unless things drastically turn around in the next several days, The Retro Attic and Awfully Awesome 80's will be shutting their doors at 11 PM eastern on February 28th. It's just not possible for me to continue dealing with a higher licensing cost if I'm taking care of 2/3 to 3/4 of the operating costs every month.

It's not out of the question that I could return one day, and it's also quite possible that I could be back in the short term as an occasional podcaster.

If you can help these stations to survive, then please get in touch with me.

OUR NEW SHOW "ONE STEP BEYOND" AIRS TOMORROW NIGHT!

Tune in on Saturday night the 7th from 8 to 10 PM eastern for "One Step Beyond!" You will hear a mix of 27 80's artists who tried to stay relevant in the 90's; some had no problem, some really struggled, and some had to settle for hits in the UK.

For those who listen at work, there will be a repeat airing on Wednesday the 11th from 1 to 3 PM eastern.

Tune in at http://awfullyawesomeeighties.com. If you're planning on using the webpage player, then please access it through any web browser other than Google Chrome(I have a new server that is Chrome compatible, but it will take several days to set up my playlists in it). Mobile apps should continue to pick the station up without any problems.
